Innovative Security & Communications

#1 Home and Business Security Provider in McMinnville, OR

Ralph BrickleyIn the past decade we have heard every reason why people should have a security alarm, and many reasons why they may not.
Article by Ralph Brickley

Some people feel, and not completely without reason, that having homes or business properties far away from quick-response city districts make having an alarm system without a highly perceived benefit. Often people feel that because  authorities take so long to respond, it means that the alarm has no good value. This is somewhat of a short-sighted view.

There is in fact a large list of benefits, even for rural properties that far outweigh the argument of the uselessness of having an alarm system in place.  In no way could I exhaust them all, but this article is written to help assure some people or business managers of why they should have a properly monitored fire and burglary alarm system in place.

1. Required

Fire Alarm Horn StrobeFor many commercial applications and businesses, NFPA regulations require that the facility have an actively monitored fire alarm system. In some buildings that already have sprinklers installed, otherwise known as a ‘Suppression System’, they still require a UL listed Fire Alarm Control Panel that monitors the water-flow switch and tamper switch on the main water feeds to the building. These regulations also come with requirements for Daily Testing or Timer Testing where the monitoring company must monitor whether or not they receive a ‘timer test’ signal from the alarm panel every 24 hours to ensure adequate protection.

Beyond that, many insurance companies may require some type of adequate or complete smoke/heat detection to protect their insurance investment. Statistically, properties that have monitored coverage are far less likely to be burglarized and/or suffer complete loss due to fire damage. Recently we bid  a home alarm system where the new owners of the rural home were given a home insurance quote that would double without having an actively monitored system that included smoke detection. While this wasn’t a requirement, it quickly became one for the home-owner who was faced with a much larger premium and no protection.

2. Emotional Benefit

Local Crime Map for McMinnville, OR

Often peace of mind is the first and fore-most thought in the people, especially residential owners when considering an alarm system. With neighborhood crime fluctuation or even being victimized personally, people see the alarm system as a way to ‘feel’ more protected. If this was the only benefit gained by having an alarm system it would be well worth it.

As humans, we do many things to make ourselves feel better. We drink our coffee in the morning, some go shopping, others turn to poorly chosen habits or addictions in a hope to feel better. It is a proven statistic from the United States Department of Justice that 1 in 5 homes in America are burglarized every year. The Federal Bureau of Investigations tells us that homes with monitored alarm systems are 4 times less likely to be burglarized.

These numbers when compared to many local crime rates ring very true, and that does give us peace of mind. It is also comforting to know that while we are away, something and someone is standing by to respond to events at our home or business. Many modern systems even monitor for power failures, low system batteries and you can even add water bugs and other devices to provide even more comprehensive protection.

Innovative Security offers free Text/Email alerts for all of our alarm customers so that even while away on vacation you can be notified of events at home, allowing you to coordinate repairs if necessary, even while away!

3. Financial Benefits

As stated earlier in this article, we recently bid a home alarm project that include minor smoke detection that cut the home owners insurance premium quote by 50%. This is rather abnormal but it can happen. The home was located nearly 5 miles from the city district which placed it at a much higher loss risk due to slow response times. With a monitored security alarm that dispatches fire trucks immediately, the possibility of loss is much smaller and therefore it saves the insurance company claims money.

Nearly every home and business insurance carrier will provide premium discounts depending on what type of coverage you have and what type of alarm systems you have in place. I have seen discounts as low as 5% and as high as 15%. Some companies give deeper discounts if you have smoke detection, some lump the discount into one whether you have a normal burglary/intrusion detection system or include smoke detection in your system.

Furthermore, it is now a requirement for new properties and rental properties to have carbon monoxide detection. Many insurance companies will cease to ensure properties without regulated protection, which in turn is a financial benefit to you for having adequate protection.

In an attempt at simplicity, I’m going to make up some numbers. Let’s say you pay $1500 every year for insurance, and by having a monitored alarm system, your insurance company provides a 15% discount. That is $225.00 that you save annually. The cost of standard alarm monitoring is $19.95/mo, or, $239.40 annually. By obtaining that discount, your annual out-of-pocket cost for better protection ends up being $14.40. That’s a pretty good deal!

Commercially speaking, we have worked with companies who had been burglarized so many times, their insurance carrier dropped them. The huge expense of time and money getting a new insurance carrier plus installing the alarm system created a strain on this customer and was another layer of stress for the owners. If even the insurance companies know that having security is a protection to them, how much more should we know it will protect our own homes or businesses?

4. Advanced Functionality

For many people, alarm systems are no longer simply alarm systems! Many new technologies have advanced the functionality of alarm systems and are morphing into home automation or home controls. Many alarm platforms today allow you to turn lights on or off, open or close blinds, turn devices on or off remotely and even be notified or actively monitor whether or not children are home.

Newer technology allows you to add video cameras and receive notification when children come home, or even keep tabs on cleaning people. Many parts of the alarm industry are turning to convenient features for home owners and businesses alike with products like cellular backup. Cellular backup provides added features such as remotely arming/disarming your alarm system with today’s popular smartphone, or managing your own user codes and automatic arming/disarming schedules via an easy to use online interface.

We handle a large number of Papa Murphy’s pizza franchise stores and several owners can’t imagine not having security and more importantly, not having the added features that come with it. Having managers notified if the store opens late or closes early is a huge management tool, or if the alarm triggers, being notified in seconds what has happened and checking out cameras seconds later on the same smartphone make choosing whether or not to dispatch police easy and a cost-saver, especially in jurisdictions that charge for false alarm dispatches.

x. Conclusion

All that being said, alarm systems are really no longer alarm systems, and Innovative Security takes it one step further than the competition. Most companies offer so called ‘free’ installs but in the fine print ‘free’ means you pay a much larger amount, later. You are locked into a long-term contract, with an inflated monthly price and very large termination fees.

Here at Innovative Security, we merge the latest technology with ‘hand-shake’ customer service ethics. We don’t require long-term contracts for monitoring, not even an annual contract. Our services are on a month-to-month basis for alarm monitoring, and no, we do not raise the rates for that.

No Contracts

Innovative Security & Communications in McMinnville, Oregon has made a bold promise to our customers. No Contracts Required for Home Alarm or Business Security Monitoring.

Why is this such an important topic that you dedicate a blog post to it?

If I were to document every time a call comes in from someone desperately wanting to change service providers, I could start a whole new blog. The sad reality is that many of them are stuck because they are locked into a contract. Most alarm companies, and I mean more than 9 out of 10, put all their hope and future into contracts. That means getting out of it will require a fight,  your checkbook, and a large amount of time. If you can’t get out of your contract, your options become more limited and expensive – replace all of your equipment and start over.

So what do you do differently?

Innovative Security knows that life can change in a moment. We also know that building long-term relationships with our customers is much more important than having some legal meat hook to hold over them. We don’t hold any contracts over our customers.

Our alarm monitoring services are free of contracts, meaning they are all 30-day agreements. You can cancel monitoring at any time without imposing fines on yourself, and turn it back on later if you wish. The ironic part of this is that we haven’t lost a customer yet!

Sure, we have a few deactivated accounts, but all of those accounts either moved, or stopped using their alarm altogether. We don’t lose alarm accounts to other companies that want to lock you into a contract for alarm monitoring.

If you are interested in home or business alarm service that puts you first, check out our website, great a free quote and start on a relationship path that favors you and your needs.

The national average is that about 15% of our homes have security alarms of some time. A vast majority of people tend to inquire or purchase alarms after a break in occurs, either in their home or a neighbors, friends or relatives.

It makes sense that fear, or concern for safety, is a significant motivator to get security, and alarm company advertisements play on that theme. Since every household has a TV or gets a newspaper it’s likely that every consumer of alarm systems has been exposed to one ad or another offering a “secure” alarm system.

Man breaking through front door

According to the 2009 FBI Crime Statistics

* Number: In 2007, 9.3 million property crimes took place.

* Of that 9.3 million property crimes, 2.2 million were burglaries. That is approximately 720 burglaries per 100,000 per capita

* Frequency: A burglary occurs every 14 seconds in the US. Truly scary when one thinks about it.

* Time of day: The vast majority of burglaries take place during the day: between 6am and 6pm. This the time when generally people are at work, so their houses are most vulnerable. Personally speaking, my house has been broken into twice (a long time ago – before I got an alarm system), and both times occurred during midday.

* Lost property: The average victim of a burglary lost property worth around $2,000. This is an important factor to take into account when purchasing a home security system.

* Entry points: The burglar enters through the main entrance to the house, normally the front door, in more than a third of burglaries. This was the case for my break-ins as well.

* Crime trends: Historically speaking, when the economy is not doing well, property crime and burglary have increased. This is not a surprising statistic. Since we are now in the worst recession since the great depression, this is another statistic that should be seriously taken into account.

* Biggest factor, and most interesting: homes with monitored security systems are 3 times less likely to be broken into or robbed than homes without such a system. Burglars are not stupid and can tell when it is more likely they will be caught. By simply raising the bar of difficulty, you’re pushing the potential burglar to pick a different place instead of yours.

Stop False AlarmsThis is a hard question to answer! After many many years of experience in the Security industry, User Error pops up as the culprit of nearly EVERY false alarm!

We certainly can’t change the user to stop false alarms, but I would like to write out a few ideas to help our customers reduce false alarms, and for those unfortunates in false alarm jurisdictions, hopefully save some money!

Top False Alarm Occurences

Believe it or not, some regulations have allowed agencies ( Police Departments and Government heads ) to charge security installation and monitoring companies for allowing false alarms to occur too frequently! In truth, false alarms cost an awful lot of tax-payer dollars for wasted time sending emergency personnel for false alarms. Consider these top reasons for false alarms:

  1. Balloons! Yes! Major cause of alarms! But how could a smart, pet-immune motion detector pickup a balloon?? Balloons are warm-air filled objects that float around. Most major detectors look for heat signatures that move. Ala, False Alarm.
  2. Door bown open… Mother Nature can get us every time! A little gust of wind can cause enough air pressure shift to blow open a door that isn’t latched all the way, setting your alarm off.
  3. Someone Forgot Their Code! Haven’t we all heard of this one? It’s typical that you forget your code, or panic and start punching numbers on the keypad for your security alarm. Siren starts, things get worse, you run… False Alarm.
  4. Oops! I forgot my keys… Yes, we’ve all seen this one a dozen times! Someone arms the alarm, goes out the door, locks the door, takes two steps and…Bam! Rush back in the door, keypad is beeping, and then, the siren goes! Monitoring calls, police are on the way! You say no! Cancel, don’t send the police! Too late…

So what can you really do to stop false alarms??

There are several steps you can take to reduce false alarms, whether you have an alarm in your home or your business.

  1. When leaving for the day or longer, make sure to check over the area covered by motion detectors for loose-fluttering objects like Balloons, large pets like dogs, etc.
  2. Make sure all doors/windows are shut securely. The sensor on your door may thing the door is shut but the latch may not be securely engaged.

Security controls for business is a disregarded tool that few owners have learned to harness! One of the tools that security systems provide is reports of when your alarm system is opened ( disarmed ) or closed ( armed ). The system is even typically configurable to tell you who armed or disarmed your system.

The management possibilities are rich when using your security system to help control aspects of your business. Seen as a false-alarm causing necessary evil, many aspects of security are overlooked. Consider the possibility of being able to track daily if employees, cleaning crews and deliveries are coming and going when they are supposed to be.

  1. Track when your business is opened and closed, daily
  2. Know precisely when and by who your security alarm was armed or disarmed
  3. Set automatic arming and disarming schedules – never forget to arm your system again
  4. Receive notification if your employees come in late or leave early

Consider this possibility and request more information if you are interested in making your security alarm a tool to help run your business.

IN A SLOW ECONOMY, FEW TURN TO SECURITY AND FIRE ALARMS TO FIND SAVINGS

Too few know the abundant benefits of having a monitored fire or burglar alarm system, whether it is for your business or for your home. Fewer still think of it as a cost-savings tool.

To briefly describe why having a monitored home security alarm or home/business fire alarm by Innovative Security, let’s compare the benefits to the cost.

  1. Low Monthly Cost – Only $19.95/mo for burglar alarm monitoring and/or homes with smoke detection, $29.95/mo for commercial fire alarms
  2. No annual or multi-year contracts. We protect our customers by giving them the ability to choose a provider based on quality not legalese terms
  3. Free TEXT/Email Alerts for all account activity – know real time when your system has a problem vs. waiting potentially weeks to find you have something to fix
  4. Up to a 15% discount on insurance premiums ( Example: $500 Annual Premium = $75 potential discount, $1000 premium = $150 potential discount )

Installing a security or fire alarm system will never pay for itself upfront but the savings could seriously mitigate the cost of monitoring. When compared to the alternatives, the price is right! The U.S. Depart of Justice shows us that 1 in 5 homes will be burglarized, and the F.B.I. finds that homes with burglar alarms are 4 times less likely to be burglarized.

Businesses who invest in protecting their employees either by choice or regulation will find their system providing them more intuitive information about what is happening on their facilities, provide premium discounts and faster response to fire events.

Find out why so many businesses and homes have picked Innovative Security to be their home security alarm or business security and fire alarm monitoring service provider! Check us out online at http://www.innovativesc.com or friend us on facebook!

Business security shouldn’t be difficult – it should be effective

Security, Computer Screen and the Internet. Millions of small and large companies have invested thousands, even millions into security protection. It’s a huge concern, protecting private or sensitive customer information, employees, office equipment, etc.

Unfortunately old technology turned well-meaning security alarms into midnight nightmares, false alarm bills, frustrations and troubles. Technology has advanced to the place where small business security systems are a powerful tool that is little known. As security provider and consultant I hear stories about how the alarm didn’t work, it goes off all the time so we ignore it, never turn it on any more, etc.

Looking for a way to make that security system work for you?

Try these powerful tips to makie your small business security system an investment with an ROI.

  1. Get Text/Email alerts for Opening and Closing events. Know when you employees ( and which ones ) open shop and who/when they close shop. Nothing can be more powerful that having a work force that is timely and doing their job.
  2. Set Arming/Disarming Schedules. Afraid of the last person out forgetting to arm the system? Nearly all modern alarm systems support automatic schedules to do this for you! You can also be alerted if employees don’t open the store on time! Set supervision schedules to make sure the store opens and closes when it’s supposed! Not late, not early!
  3. Use Cellular Backup. Have you ever wondered what happens when someone disables your phone line? Your answer is correct; nothing! Without a means to communicate your alarm can’t do it’s job. With cellular backup products your alarm turns into a power house! Not only will it continue working with no phone line, it has features like Smash & Grab. Because cellular products are real-time, if they become disabled the system knows immediately and triggers an alarm event.
  4. Pick a security alarm company that actually pays attention! I’ve had accounts that I’ve assumed control of and the previous company didn’t know they were no longer receiving a signal from that customer for months! Innovative Security tracks our customers on a daily basis to make sure we know what’s going on. Often, we know before our customers when there is a problem with their alarm, a sensor or phone line.
